The Young Harts Writing Festival is a new and innovative production that sees five young writers go head to head with five professional writers in a two night festival at the Lyric Hammersmith.

The aim is to break down boundaries and bridge the gap between young creative talent with the industry.

The Competition

Any young writers, aged 10 – 25, were invited to submit a 10 - minute play on the theme of ‘Power’. Five professional writers were also commissioned to write to the same brief. The exciting line up of professional writers include: Arinze Kene, Isley Lynn, Luke Barnes, Phoebe Eclair- Powell and Somalia Seaton.

‘Power’ can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, so the final pieces promise to be a varied portrait on what ‘power’ is to each writer.

The five winners have been selected and invited to join a master class with acclaimed writer Rikki Beadle Blair, guiding them on how to further fine tune their work, prior to submitting their final draft.

In addition each young writer is appointed a professional writer as his or her mentor.

The Plays

All ten plays will be directed by Roy Alexander Weise, (Royal Court, Trainee Director) and produced by Ann Akin (Artistic Director Harts Theatre Company).

The Actors will also be a combination of both professional actors and young talent, keeping with the theme of creating an environment that is more accessible to young people. The cast will include actors such as Osy Ikhile and Theo Barklem-Biggs to name just a few.

The Twist

The author of each piece will not be revealed. At the end of each night the audience votes to decide the winner. Will it be the Young Team or the Professional team? You decide.
